Exciting World First at Ränggloch

At the new Ränggloch retaining viaduct, both types are being used:Steel and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) prestressing cables. And the anchorage of the latter is a global first: It is made entirely of CFRP.

The Oder Bridge at Küstrin-Kietz exemplifies the advanced potential of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) technology in modern railway bridge construction. By implementing CFRP hangers, the project addressed numerous structural and logistical challenges with a single, innovative solution.

The decision to implement CFRP hangers in the bridge design was not without significant challenges, requiring extensive testing and rigorous approval processes to ensure the safety, durability, and performance of the final solution.

The initial design of the bridge specified oversized steel hangers to accommodate the high fatigue loads typically encountered in railway network arch bridges. While this approach was conventional, it introduced several critical challenges.

The new Oder Bridge at Küstrin-Kietz is the world’s first railway bridge to use CFRP hangers - designed and produced by Carbo-Link - marking a pivotal advancement in bridge engineering by replacing steel with a lighter, more durable, and fatigue-resistant solution essential to the project’s success.

The Oderbrücke Küstrin-Kietz–Kostrzyn, has been honored with the prestigious German Bridge Construction Award 2025 in the "Road and Railway Bridges" category. This accolade recognizes the bridge's innovative design, economic efficiency, and sustainability.
