Infrastructure · CL SOLID carbon bridge hangers

Oderbrücke.

Connecting the past
to the future.

88 Carbo-Link carbon hangers support a 130-metre network arch across the Oder, connecting Germany and Poland.

Opened in 2024, the award-winning railway bridge demonstrates how a lightweight hanger system can help reduce material demand across the wider structure and simplify installation.

The project

A historic route.
A new structural approach.

The crossing between Küstrin-Kietz and Kostrzyn forms part of the historic Prussian Eastern Railway. Its replacement strengthens a regional and freight connection between Germany and Poland.

The new 266-metre superstructure combines a 130-metre network arch with an eastern approach. It accommodates two railway tracks, is designed for speeds up to 120 km/h and makes provision for future electrification.

The challenge

The project team needed to replace an aging crossing while preserving an elegant architectural concept and meeting demanding railway loading, fatigue, and approval requirements.

The opportunity

sbp's alternative superstructure replaced the proposed flat steel hangers with CFRP tension members, allowing the hanger network and the surrounding structure to be considered together.

The engineering solution

Small components.
System-level consequences.

Carbo-Link manufactured the 88 CL SOLID CFRP hangers for the network arch. Their contribution extends beyond the weight of the hangers themselves.

Fatigue performance

CFRP's fatigue resistance supports compact tension-member sections for repeated railway loading.

Network behaviour

Hanger cross-section, axial rigidity and prestress influence load sharing and the behaviour of the arch and deck. Material selection is part of the structural design.

Handling & assembly

Low hanger weight simplified handling at the pre-assembly site and supported a short installation operation.

Project outcomes*

The practical lesson: assess the hanger system together with the arch, deck and construction sequence to understand the opportunity for the complete bridge.
