CL SOLID BRIDGE CABLES
INNOVATIVE CARBON CABLE NETWORK ARCH BRIDGE
The new light rail bridge east of the Stuttgart-Degerloch junction (B27) is a pioneering example of integrally supported network arch bridge design. Commissioned by Stuttgarter Straßenbahnen AG, the structure spans the A8 motorway, one of Germany’s busiest, without the need for intermediate supports, covering an impressive width of approximately 80 meters, including six travel lanes and four access ramps.
A hallmark of the bridge is its striking structural form: a large, prestressed concrete deck is suspended from two free-standing steel arches using inclined, intersecting carbon tension cables, CL SOLID Bridge Cables. These innovative tension members not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the bridge but also deliver exceptional structural efficiency. The CL SOLID cables transfer loads to inclined supports, visually extending the slender curve of the arches seamlessly into the ground through reinforced concrete struts.
This is the first commercial application of carbon cables in a network arch bridge, marking a major milestone in composite infrastructure technology. The three guiding principles of the project were to ensure minimal disruption to traffic, create a visually compelling structure, and achieve long-term durability across all components and details.
The bridge was constructed adjacent to its final position and later launched laterally into place during a brief full closure of the motorway, minimising traffic impact.
